If you are in London this weekend, swing by Dover Street and catch the final days of Clarendon Fine Art’s exhibition of new works by John Swannell. Swanell, a legend in English photography and famed for his portraits of celebrity and the royal family, presents a series of nude photographs that expertly capture light and movement. Representing a departure from his earlier work, the nudes display a superb interplay of light and dark… as well as obvious sex appeal.

Backpacks have been with us for centuries. With school and everyday life, most needed one at some point. Baggu is a company that specializes in bags that are really inexpensive and are all made of recycled materials. Their backpack can be used “for books, a laptop, they gym or [as] an overnight bag,” and offers a magnetic snap, buckle closure, interior pocket and adjustable shoulder straps. They used a “16oz recycled cotton canvas” which makes for a pretty sturdy bag. They’re available at Baggu.
Flavorwire reports, “California-based artist Andrew Meyers’ screw portraits take several steps to execute. First, he places pages from a phone book on top of a plywood panel base. Then, he sketches his subject’s face and pre-drills 7,000 to 10,000 holes by hand. Once the screws are in at the correct depth, he paints over each head individually to create the finished product, which looks more like a portrait than a sculpture.”
The results are surprisingly delicate and have sold for as much as $35,000.

Mr. Williams on ACL discusses some Chinese heritage in the form of this chronograph from Seagull. “While out in Vegas I was chatting with a designer friend and his watch happened to catch my eye. It was pretty classic looking, and upon further inspection, I noticed a red star and a few Chinese characters on its face. Intrigued, I needed to know more and inquired as to it. “It’s a reproduction Chinese pilot’s watch from the ’60s.” my friend said. I took a few photos and when I got home did a little investigating on the internets. Sure enough the watch is called the Seagull 1963 and it has been recently reissued.”
Depending on where your fashion references are placed in time, Frida Gianini’s latest runway collection for Gucci can leave you cold or heart palpitating gasping for air hot. I join the latter. Representing an era, illustrating glamour so palpable it’s almost heavy, there is no denying the sense of female sensual power, and extravagant opulence this collection exudes. Forget reality, this is the kind of fantasy fashion provides that had me fall in love with it in the first place. I say dream a little and luxuriate ! Enjoy a few images via Thesartorialist on the next page.
A very impressive leather piece from Rick Owens is the “Scuba jacket.” He’s done this jacket a couple seasons now but this time he has actually blistered the leather on the jacket. This season he uses a somewhat blue colored lambskin. The vintage motorcycle inspired zipper placement and long collar make for a great spring jacket. Another solid piece from Rick Owens. It’s available at ArchiveSF.
The creative world’s fascination with blackface continues, this time the twist being its application to a black woman’s face, that being the one belonging to Beyonce. Further irony applies because Beyonce has frequently been accused of lightening her skin so I imagine she must have had some fun turning that equation on its head! Skin color still matters deeply and I imagine until Martin’s dream comes true, this hot button will continue to be pressed. In the meantime, the shoot is beautiful and the hair, clothes and accessories are amazing! And according the mag, this is an anniversary issue with Beyonce’s editorial titled “African Queen,” which also is meant to pay homage to singer Fela Kuti. Funnily enough the copy points out that her face was “voluntarily darkened.” As if ole Bee would let anyone within ten feet of her face, pulling some makeup stunt she hadn’t completely signed off on and approved thoroughly. The collection looks beautiful, featuring lots of great shirts, blazers, jackets and accessories. The stand-out items on first sight include the luggage and leather accessories, the knitwear and the outerwear. Again, we are not sure it was a smart move to go with the tricolor branding, which is so heavily pushed these days by other brands, but it of course looks nice.

Though we thought the painted hair a tad ill advised at the time, looking at newly released backstage images from Alexander Wang’s Spring 2011 runway show, one has to admit that at the very least it was defining. In other AW news, the items featured on the runway hit his retail site on February 1st, and recently the young designer was nominated for GQ’s Menswear Designer Of The Year Award.

“The Last Resort” is the first image from Slinkachu’s upcoming (March) exhibition at London’s Andipa Gallery. The exhibition, entitled Concrete Ocean, opens on March 3, 2011 and closes on April 2, 2011, and brings Little People to big ponds.
Andipa Contemporary is delighted to announce a new solo exhibition: Concrete Ocean, by renowned urban artist Slinkachu. Left floating in flimsy boats on puddles the size of lakes, or clinging onto seemingly giant paving stones, in danger of being trodden underfoot by the casual passer-by, the figures in Concrete Ocean address the artists trademark theme of loneliness and disillusionment engendered by the city environment. The dry wit of his observation and the deceptive sweetness of his scaled down figures make Slinkachu’s works absorbing, strong and engaging.
“The Last Resort” was installed and photographed in Wandsworth Common.
Sometimes, rather amusing things are found on Antiques site 1stdibs. Gallery Antiques and Modern Design currently as a “Lifesize Andy Warhol sitting atop his brillo box, executed in wood by noted Gallery artist Katherine Callahan,” up for grabs. It’s noted that the piece could actually be utilized as a chair if desired.
I’d recomend against that usage, but can’t deny the appeal of the work, which was made in 1990.

We take a first look at the new Pointer x Comme des Garcons SHIRT footwear collaboration for Spring/Summer 2011. They worked with white leather and camouflage print leather this season. While we do find the get together of the two brands very interesting, we would expect more from them. Especially the white leather shoe seems a little misplaced in a collection by two brands that we otherwise appreciate a lot and are known for their solid, yet creative work. Just our opinion.
Actress and designer Nicole Richie offers up a lookbook for her House of Harlow 1960 Spring 2011 sunglasses line launch and it’s a worthy collection that stays true to the signature style themes Richie has become known and appreciated for.
While we highly doubts that Nike actually put these out on the market we have to give kudos to the excution of the above high heel nike dunks which clearly look better than the high heel Jordans we’ve seen out and about. A precursor to what’ Louboutin X Nike or Jimmy Cho0 X Nike could look like ? Lots more on the flip

Bits and pieces of Rihanna’s latest video for her single, “S&M,” have been leaked and given the title and lyrics, there was some concern (on my part anyway) that the full video would be a step back in her evolution away from the dark and troubled Rihanna that had fueled her look and music during the “Chris Brown” era. And while this video tells us Rihanna hasn’t abandoned her past, what’s changed is now she owns it and is having a good time poking fun at it. It goes without saying the fashion is amazing–from her giant, red curly locks (note to Allure: “scary,” really??) to the white latex suit and newsprint dress, it’s all perfectly on point and a major visual treat.
The Gitman Brothers company release their new delivery for the season. With green styling being a big thing in the fashion industry today, it is not surprising to see the Gitman Brothers taking advantage of the fabrics that are available today. The piece is 88% Organic Cotton, 6% Linen and 6% Ramie. A great shirt to wear with a pair of chinos for any event. NeedSupply has them.
Here’s a nice find from Etsy. Kylie has handsewn a plush version of the iconic Polaroid Land Camera. Use as an accent pillow, or display on your desk. Either way, it’s a lovely way to celebrate an American legend. I particularly like the stitching of the trademark rainbow. These are made to order, with a projected time of 4 days to complete each individual plush Polaroid.
