Shary Boyle & Emily Duke The Illuminations Project

New at ICA Philadelphia, Shary Boyle & Emily Duke: The Illuminations Project.
Looking for an alternative to the convention in which images illustrate texts and texts explicate images, Shary Boyle and Emily Duke developed a looser, more associative method of combining words and pictures. The Illuminations Project is a series of 33 drawings and text pairs generated through long distance correspondence between 2003 and 2010. This exhibition displays 15 of the diptychs. Half of Boyle’s drawings were developed in response to Duke’s poems, and vice versa. In both cases, the responding artist used the other’s work as a point of departure rather than a directive. As a result, the project contains both narrative and more ambient pieces, exploring a violent and misogynistic world through two central characters—Bloodie and Peg-Leg. Privileging neither female nor male, nature nor culture, animal nor human, Boyle and Duke consider a wide range of issues, situations, and contexts, producing a series that presents a dark feminist take on affect and politics.
This exhibition is the first public presentation of the work and will remain on view through March 20, 2011.

Shepard Fairey - Obey to be Better! from Gestalten on Vimeo.

Accordion Cabinet

A contemporary version of the Tambour desk… perhaps… with a fanciful shape and sadly unflattering legs. That, in short is what German designer Elisa Strozyk and artist Sebastian Neeb have created with the Accordion Cabinet. It’s one of those “almost there” pieces… but, those legs.

Video | PINA – A film for PINA BAUSCH by WIM WENDERS.

PINA - Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost from neueroadmovies on Vimeo.

This is amazing. “PINA is a film for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders. The feature-length dance film was shot in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and shows the exhilarating and inimitable art of the great German choreographer who died in the summer of 2009, inviting the viewer on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: right onto the stage of the legendary ensemble and together with the dancers beyond the theater, into the city and the surrounding industrial landscape of Wuppertal – the place that was the home and center of Pina Bausch’s creative life for more than 35 years.”

Denham Teflon “Skin” Jean

Jason Denham, the brains behind Denham the jeanmaker, bring us a new take on denim. The “Skin” jean is a slim fitting pant that offers a “Virgin Black Teflon” coat. The welt pocket detail has a button closure for added security of each pocket. There’s also a hunting detail at the knee for more movement and less constriction. This detail takes note from older style hunting pants. “An innovative yoke construction visually drops the posture of the front waistline whilst retaining a standard wearable rise measurement and all signature details.” A true collector’s item that not only fits well, but it will bring high contrast fading to the fabric that will look very interesting over time.

Yang Yongliang: Cigarette Ash Landscape

“Two things about this work of art are amazing. First, the scale. Second, Yan Yongliang has turned a collection of black and white photographs and formed a collage mimicking cigarette ash. The ash itself mimics a city scape, and the photographs are all architectural. Full circle, fully engrossing.”

Float Cappuccino Cups

Designed by Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, the Float Cappuccino Cups are manufactured in Canada (that’s for you, Pete). “The double-layered structure of the Float glassware series separates the bowl containing the liquid from the hand, keeping cold liquids from warming in the hand and hot liquids from scalding. Condensation is also elevated from the table surface, eliminating the need for coasters. All of the items are mouth-blown from borosilicate glass, an extremely pure and chemically inert glass which is heat resistant.”

“Locals Only – California Skateboarding 1975-1978″ Book

Locals Only Locals Only California Skateboarding 1975 1978 Book is the photographic history of the the 70’s California skate scene during the height of the drought which lead to explosion in not only bowl riding but the sport of skateboarding. “One afternoon in 1975, a young photographer named Hugh Holland drove up Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles and encountered skateboarders carving up the drainage ditches along the side of the canyon. Immediately transfixed by their grace and athleticism, he knew he had found an amazing subject. Although not a skateboarder himself, for the next three years Holland never tired of documenting skateboarders surfing the streets of Los Angeles, parts of the San Fernando Valley, Venice Beach, and as far away as San Francisco and Baja California, Mexico.”
